Cheap Ink Refills

The price you pay for cheap goods...

Are you considering buying cheap ink refills? I advise you think twice before taking this route. The price you pay in the end might be more than you bargained for!

What do I mean? Well there are definite disadvantages to buying ink cartridge refills. At best, they usually give poor print quality. At worst, they might permanently affect your printer.

Don't be fooled by terminology either. Whether it's an 'ink refill kit', a 'remanufactured cartridge', a 'refurbished cartridge', or any other system which promotes 'generic inks', they all have reasonably similar pitfalls.

Extremely Rapid Fading

One of the known disadvantages of refilled ink cartridges is that printed pictures generally fade much quicker. Here are some quotes from a 2006 UK Press Release which give you an idea:

"A new study at the independent testing organisation Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc (WIR) shows that photos printed with refilled cartridges can fade significantly in less than two months"

"For example, prints made with Tesco-refilled ink cartridges and Tesco-branded photo paper faded 730 times more rapidly than prints made with original HP inkjet print cartridges and paper."

The article makes clear that HP inks can last up to 73 years before fading significantly, whereas refilled ink cartridges can fade in as little as 2 months. If you want to read the whole article, click here.

Print Heads

Talking of HP printers, these are a fine example of another reason why cheap ink refills are costly in the long run. HP build their print heads into the cartridges, with the intent that each time you replace the cartridge, you get a brand new set of print heads!

This is an exceedingly effective defense against blocked or damaged print heads, which can severely affect print quality. If you use ink refills, you don't get this defense!

Not all manufacturers build print heads into their cartridges, but if yours does, think extra hard about ink refills!

Manufacturer's Recommendations

Apart from anything else, refilling ink cartridges is against the manufactures recommendations.

This may seem superficial, the manufacturer probably recommends you clean the insides of your printer regularly too, but how many of us do that?!

There is a more gripping concern though. If you do insist on buying cheap ink refills, then be sure that you're not voiding your manufacturer's warrantee by using them!

You Get What You Pay For

The bottom line is, you get what you pay for. My personal advice is that you should NOT buy ink cartridge refills, however cheap they are.

In my experience, they are just that ... CHEAP!

Don't despair though! You do NOT have to pay lots of money if you want the genuine article. Find out where to get genuine ink cartridges cheaply, without paying for massive high-street profit margins at the same time!

I wish you every fortune with your printer, and hope that you find cheap genuine ink cartridges, that will remove the need to look for cheap ink refills.

Kind Regards
