Photoshop Lightning Brush Set

Electrifying art...

Lightning can be a terrifying thing. I can still recall thunder storms from when I was very young, and remember holding onto my mother tightly as I watched out of the window for the first time.

But as I've grown older, I've come to also view lightning as a very beautiful thing. As varied and extensive as the wonders of nature are, there is something uniquely magnificent about lightning that makes it both awesome and dazzling, yet also quite scary!

I've always liked other people's artistic impressions of lightning, so naturally I wanted to be able to include nature's light-show in my own artwork. It didn't take me long to realize just how challenging this was though!

If you've ever tried to draw a thunder storm yourself, you'll probably know what I'm talking about. I spent some time practicing however, and eventually I decided to create some lightning brushes to make reproducing lightning easy!

The lightning brush set includes both photo-realistic lightning, and cartoon-style lightning symbols. This way you'll have everything you need, whether you're adding a bleak night sky to an atmospheric scene, or faking a spoof weather forecast!

These two examples took just a few minutes to create using the brush set.

Techniques

To create realistic lightning-filled skies, I find the best technique uses white lightning brushes on a colored background.

Try adding a dark sky image to one layer, then choosing white, or very light blue in your palette, and using the lightning brushes on the next layer up.

If you want to create your own sky, why not try a multi-layer method for this too. Dab on some different shades of a color like blue or orange until the first layer is filled. Then add a heavy Gaussian blur to the layer so they merge into a mist of varied color.

Add some depth by using the Clouds filter on a few new layers, and blending them in by specifying very low opacity values for them.

Health Warning

I must issue these brushes with a disclaimer... Don't play with lightning! You might suffer the consequences:
